Whether you\u2019re just starting out or refining your business presence, here are\u00a0five essentials<\/strong> that instantly elevate your business and establish credibility without a huge investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\\’re employed by a company, you\u2019re handed everything you need to do your job\u2014your computer, phone, email, and even business cards. The company has a logo, website, and\u00a0procedures established for how to get the work done.

But when you work for yourself,\u00a0none of that is\u00a0handed\u00a0to you<\/strong>. It\u2019s entirely up to you to put those pieces in place. And even though many solo professionals have come from a corporate past, they don\u2019t bring many of these things into their own businesses.

I think that\u2019s a mistake.

Many solo professionals assume that because they are small, they can get by without pulling together all the essential components of their business. But, whether you\u2019re just starting out or have been in business for years, these\u00a0five essentials<\/strong>\u00a0will show the world that you\u2019re a professional who means business! In the long run it really makes things easier for you too.

1. Get a professional business card<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your card makes an impression every time you hand it to someone \u2013 a small investment in a professional looking card will make a good one! Hire a designer or use templates on Canva or another design tool to create and have it professionally printed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you use virtual business cards? It\\’s great to have an option to send a virtual card, but they don\u2019t always work, as was the case at an event I attended last week. Someone offered to send me her info by tapping her smart watch, but because of poor cell coverage it never came through! Having cards on hand is simple and reliable.

2. Use a Professional Email Address<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have your own website, your email should match your domain name (e.g.,\u00a0yourname@yourcompany.com<\/strong>) rather than using a free Gmail or Yahoo account.\u00a0You\u2019ve already purchased your domain name, so setting up a custom email is just a few more steps and definitely worth the effort.

3. Get a Professional Headshot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This should be retaken every couple of years and used on your website, LinkedIn profile, and marketing materials. It doesn\u2019t have to be expensive, but a\u00a0clear, well-lit photo taken by a professional gives your brand a polished and approachable image.\u00a0

4. Invest in the Right Tools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you have what you need to run your business well\u2014a reliable computer, good printer, and dedicated workspace where you can work distraction-free. Invest in the software you need not only to do your work, but to maintain your business on the back end too. You might even be surprised that some software can meet your needs under a free plan, or for very little per month. I\u2019ve been using the free version of\u00a0Monday.com<\/a>\u00a0(affiliate link) to manage my client projects and track my goals and I love it. It helps me see the big picture in one spot, versus planning everything on paper.

5. Maintain a Consistent Brand Look<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your website, presentations, and marketing materials should have a cohesive look. Stick with the same fonts, colors, and messaging across everything you create. This builds recognition and makes your business appear established and trustworthy.
